Queen's Funeral Procession at Cowes

This photograph, which is one of the finest of its kind ever taken, represents the funeral procession passing along one of the main streets of Cowes on its way from Osborne to Trinity Pier, where the coffin was put aboard the Alberta. Practically the entire procession is here portrayed, from the band pacing slowly to the strains of the Funeral March, to the last of the mourners, and the Life Guards, who bring up the rear. The mourners are all on foot, and good portraits of most of them are obtained as they pass quite close to the observer. The King leads the solemn group, and at his side walk the German Emperor and the Duke of Connaught, and the Princesses in their deep black afford a striking contrast to the brighter colours of the soldiers who surround them.
