Market Scenes in the London Ghetto

URBAN 1905-02

The London Ghetto-Sunday Morning in Petticoat Lane, Whitechapel

We are much indebted to Mr. E . Barnett, the "Kosher King,'' for facilities placed at our disposal, by which assistance only was it possible to procure the successful results depicted in this series.
One of the most interesting sights of London life is to be had in Middlesex Street (formerly Petticoat Lane) on Sunday morning and Fridays, the latter being the Jewis market day. The series comprises about 50 pictures of the· most interesting incidents, both vendors and buyers being faithfully depicted. The first view shows a general picture of the entire length of the Lane with its thousands of stalls and surging crowds of buyers all seeking after a bargain. Here one can purchase anything from rusty nails to gold ? watches, eel jelly to live geese and chickens, clothes, fish, ice creams, vegetables, carpet, old shoes, keys, saws, iron safes, meats ; get your teeth drawn, your corns cured, second hand garments to fit everyone, china and crockery, eggs, butter, &c., &c.
For human types of East London and their occupations on the mornings of the specified days there are none more interesting or picturesque. This series portrays all absolutely true to nature.
