CHRONOPHOTOGRAPHY.—This very long Name has been given to another development of the process by which photographs are presented in such quick succession to the eye that the movements of scenes can be thrown upon a screen. At a recent meeting of the Photographic Club at Anderton’s Hotel, Mr. H. M. Smith, of Eastman’s Photographic Materials Company, introduced the chronophotograph for the first time to an English audience, The advantages claimed for this invent on are that its construction is strong, its management is easy, its working sure, and, more important than all, the machine does not tear the long photographic films on which the hundreds of pictures are taken, and which pass before the shutter of the machine. Mr. Smith gave an explanation of the machine, and pointed out its peculiar merits, After the description several pictures were thrown on the screen by M. Demeny and M. Gaumont, of Paris. Amoungst the pictures were ploughing with a team of oxen, the start for the Paris-Bordeaux Motor-Car Race, a Japanese ballet, and others. The pictures all came ont very clearly, and the fluttering which is so prominent in many of these machines was almost entiely absent.
