Le Myriograph de Joseph Poole (Hippodrome, <2> octobre 1905)
Le Myriograph de Joseph Poole présente des vues animées en octobre :
POOLE'S AT THE HIPPODROME.
For quite a quarter of a century the name of Poole has been familiar to old and young in reference to an entertainment that has always been welcome on its annual visit to the town. In former days it used to fill the Volunteer Drill Hall, and later on crammed the Assembly Room of the Town Hall and now draws large crowds of people to the Hippodrome. Last night the Myriorama was visited by a large number of people, who were given nearly three hours of genuine entertainment, in which interest and humour were the principal ingredients, The present combination is under the general direction of Mr. Joseph Poole, one of the famous brothers whose exhibitions are known all over the country. The subject of the Myriorama this year is " The War in the Far East," and the proprietors have spared no expense in providing a magnificent display illustrative of the principal events in the fateful campaign. Among the more effective tableaux are "The blessing of the Tear" ; bombardment of Port Arthur, in which ships and land batteries are seen at their work of destruction; a view of Wei-Hai-Wei, the great battle of the Sea of Japan and the annihilation of the Russian Fleet. In the exhibition of these war scenes Messrs. Poole have introduced their new myriograph, by which animated photography combined with myrioramic effects enable them to give an even more realistic idea of events as they took place than ever before. The myriograph is also utilised for a separate display of the animated pictures, among which are fine reproductions of the Gordon-Bennet Cup and the St. Louis Exhibition. The variety company travelling with the myriorama is of special excellence, and, introduced as they are at intervals during the picture show, form a pleasing and enjoyable break to the proceedings. Mr. Felix de Marce introduced his performing ponies and dogs last evening to the large audience, and their remarkable tricks were exceedingly entertaining, while the two equestrian baboon showed much intelligence. Miss May Finch appeared as a character vocalist, and secured the approbation of the audience. The Veronas are clever dancers, vocalists, and duettists, and Mr. Felix Somers, an old favourite, appeared in his entertainment, "people We Know," in which he most successfully assumed the characteristics and facial expression of various public celebrities. Nash and Nash, a pair of patter comedians, and the three Phydoras, in an eccentric and knockabout display, are also included is the lengthy programme. Mr. Nat Abatt is the popular guide to the war scenes, and much is learned from his graphic descriptions. The orchestral selections by Poole's String Band are well played, and the entertainment is as full of interest and amusement as any we have seen. There will be matinees on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons at three o'clock.
