Calf Branding

This picture was secured during the annual "round-up" on the ranch of the Alfalfa Land and Cattle Co., El Paso County, Colorado, which is one of the largest and best known ranches in the state. lt shows a mounted cowboy leaving the vast herd of cattle and dragging a calfat the end of his lariat. The calf struggles frantically to escape and is repeatedly thrown to the ground, until it is finally overcome, when red-hot brands are burned into his hide, the smoke from the brand being plainly seen. This operation is repeated on both sides of the calf. The fire in which the irons are heated is in the centre of the picture. A large herd of restless cattle make up the background of the picture.
