British Highlanders exercising

The characteristic costume of the British Highlanders is shown to a great advantage in this scene. Here we see assembled a regiment of Royal Scots going through an exercise drill. The different figures and motions they accomplish are very picturesque, and must tend, evidently, to their muscular development in a remarkable degree. The band, seen in the background, furnishes the music to keep this exercise in time.
