The Flower and Vegetable Market at Covent Garden
This and the preceding picture were secured by the courtesy of Mr. J. Assbee, Supt. of Covent Garden Market. Covent Garden is world-famed. Here London gets its main supply of cut flowers and pot plants, the majority of which are further distributed from this point through the Flower Girl and the Coster. Hundreds of these dealers throng the scene of activity where hard bargains are being driven and hundreds of thousands of plants and blossoms changing hands daily.
The picture starts with general views of the street approaches to and, surrounding Covent Garden Market. Thousands of heavily laden wagons and carts arriving and departing, unloading or reloading. Stacks of baskets carried on heads of porters, either empty or filled. Fruit in crates, baskets, barrels, and bunches are seen everywhere. Women shelling peas, flower girls removing their purchases, vegetables being loaded on coster carts which are driven off as soon as filled, &c., &c. Whole volumes could be written in explanation of the great activity as portrayed by this series which is the first of its kind, the scenes being faithful reproductions of Covent Garden life in full swing. 275 feet
