I can remember quite well the very first films that were made in Holmfirth. I appeared in most of them myself along with Mr. Edwin Bamforth. I believe the earliest picture of all was taken up at Wheatclose above Holmbridge. To this time I acted the part of a choleric squire and I had to chase a number of small boys who had been playing on my estate. There was snow and ice on the ground at the time and I fell on a slide the boys had made and the young ruffians pelted me with snowballs. In a few minutes I was almost buried in snow, but I was rescued by a kindly passer-by (played by Mr. Bamforth) and the film ended with a view of the boys running away. It was quite a simple little film, but it 'took' all right. The boys who appeared in this film came from the day school at Holmbridge. They were delighted when we called at the school and got the schoolmaster to let them out early so that they could assist. We bought them some sweets and explained exactly what they had to do. The boys were enthusiastic and the vim they put into their snowball throwing left me with a singing head for weeks.
