L'Animatoscope de l'Home Products Exhibition (Hazard's Pavilion, 16 janvier-6 février 1897)
À l'occasion de la Home Products Exhibition, un animatoscope est annoncé :
EXHIBITION ATTRACTIONS.
The executive committee of the Home Products exhibition held a meeting at the Merchants and Manufacturers' association rooms in the Wilcox building last night. The evening was devoted to transacting routine business. It was decided to offer a cash prize of $75 to the exhibitor who shows the best decorated booth at the pavilion on Saturday, January 16. An attraction has been secured in the way of an animatoscope, an improvement on the vitascope, which is to be exhibited each evening during the exposition. This instrument will throw an illustration on a canvas 12x16 feet, and will undoubtedly prove a great drawing card.
Los Angeles Herald, Los Angeles, dimanche 3 janvier 1897, p. 23.
Los Angeles Evening Express, Los Angeles, mardi 12 janvier 1897, p. 6.
Un article publié quelques jours plus tard propose quelques titres du répertoire :
THE ANIMATOSCOPE
The exhibition of the animatoscope, which throws life-size moving pictures on a screen, was a novel and interesting feature of the evening's programe. The scenes presented were perfectly true to life. The first picture shown represented a moving throng at the Union depot, New York; another the closing hour at a large factory, where the employes are pouring out of the doors preparatory for leaving for home. Other views were shown of a hurdle race on horseback, the New York police on parade, and a comical scene represented a negro fishing, when a man steps up behind and pushes him into the water. The animatoscope is a wonderful instrument and will be an interesting feature during the progress of the exhibition.
Los Angeles Herald, Los Angeles, mardi 19 janvier 1897, p. 3.
De nouvelles vues sont annoncées peu après :
The animatoscope was productive of the usual interest. Tonight will be a complete change in the animatoscope program. Wight new scenes of life-size figures will be added. There will be a cock fight, tally-ho coach, band drill, the first act of the Milk White Flag, the Buffalo horse show, the Atlantic seaboard, a scene of a girl feeding doves and a rural comic scene.
Los Angeles Evening Express, Los Angeles, samedi 23 janvier 1897, p. 2.
Dans un autre journal, on consacre un article plus significatif aux vues animées :
EXPOSITION OF HOME PRODUCTS
[...]
Next came the animatoscope, which gave nine different scenes, 60,000 pictures in all. The first was a farmyard, with the housewife feeding the chickens, and doves, that flew and scratched and pecked at the grain in a manner so life-like that the coos and clucks were almost audible. The troubles of the farmer were then depicted, and after that a rooster fight, so animated and true to nature that a small boy in the audience forgot his surroundings and lustily yelled, "Sic 'em, hooray." A tally-ho coach was seen driving along the road in one scene and another represented the famous board walk at Atlantic City. The horse show at Buffalo followed, the splendid animals prancing across the screen in gallant style, and then came the band drill, with a scene from the first act of Hoyt's "Milk-White Flag." Last of all was the fire scene, repeated by request, from last week, and its realism can best be imagined by the criticisms of a little girl, who was heard to say in an awed whisper: "Oh! mamma, do they have those really things in back there."
The Los Angeles Times, Los Angeles, dimanche 24 janvier 1897, p. 11.
Quelques autres vues sont annoncées dans un autre journal :
REMINISCENCES OF THE WAR
[...]
Yerterday was Grand Army day at the Home Products' exhibition, and the exercises at the pavilion were conducted under the auspices of the G.A.R. and W.R.C. posts of the city.
[...]
A set of new views had been secured for the ever-popular animatoscope. These represented a militia drill, a view of the cataract at Niagara, a scene of the police patrol at a fight, a tallyhoparty, and the Empire express running at the rate of seventy miles an hour, which is probably the most interesting scene yet thrown on the canvas. Another picture represented a freight train drawing into a station. All the views are intensely interesting.
